What is Bridging Visa?

There is certain steps which applicant need to keep in mind to get PR in Australia: -

1. Skills Assessment

The very first step for General Skilled Migration is to decide which occupation they choose to pass in skill assessment. If possible, the best choice is to nominate an occupation on the skills occupations list (SOL)

2. Know how SkillSelect Works

All applicants for permanent GSM Visas must pass through the SkillSelect system. Under this, have to lodge EOI (Expression of Interest) from Department of Immigration before making application for GSM visa.

To receive invitation, person should have minimum of 65+ Points to receive EOI.

3. Graduate Temporary Visas

Graduate Temporary (Subclass 485) visas give you an extra 18 months or more depends on application, to work and live in Australia after completing studies. In this visa, you have full time right to work also.

4. Get Nominated by a State

An international student can use a state nomination which is added advantage for them as they get extra 5 points of State Sponsorship. There are high chances of getting EOI early.

5. English Language Ability

All GSM Visas require at least competent English (6 or more in each of the components in IELTS). If applicant scored high, chances of qualifying GSM is improved.

There are options of getting your English Language tested by giving IELTS or PTE which are accepted Department of Immigration in Australia.

6. Work Experience Points

Applicant can earn up to 20 Points for the work experience, both work experience in Australia and overseas can be counted in this.

To use your work experience, your work experience should be closely related to your education or related to Skill Occupation. If you were student, at least 20 hours per week worked counted in Skill and if you have breached visa conditions(by working more than 40 hours per fortnight), your experience will not count.

7. Study in Australia

After completion of your 2 years academic study in Australia, you are eligible for 5 points whereas if you study in regional area then extra 5 points benefit will be given.

Professional year will incur more 5 points in your basket and help you step up in ladder of collecting maximum points of PR.

8. Employer Sponsorship

Many students find employer sponsorship as a good alternative to General Skilled Migration because in this no skill assessment with wider range of CSOL and lower English requirement than GSM. This visa will be Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS), Visa 457 Temporary Work or RSMS (Regional Skilled Migration Scheme).

9. Bridging Visa

This visa is very tricky - getting it wrong can be costly and unlawful and can affect your eligibility for PR and for Australian citizenship.

Common Issues which student face are: -

i. Lodging EOI does not give you bridging visa. You need invitation and lodgement of General Migration Visa to get this visa and this may take some months.

ii. Generally, student receive Bridging A Visa while lodging onshore application - this cease if you depart Australia and if you wish to travel, you need Bridging B Visa during processing.
