Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a health insurance for international students that helps them to cover medical costs in Australia and it is one of the conditions of student visa to maintain OSHC for the duration of your studies.

According to Immigration Law, all Student visa holders as well as accompanying family must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the study to get approved visa. It covers students medical and hospital care with limited assistance in medicine and ambulance costs.

At the time of filing application, evidence of fully paid OSHC is necessary by having OSHC Certificate from registered providers/insurers.

There are only 5 Insurance companies which are facilitating OSHC as per the guide line of Immigration department. Prices may vary from person to person, for example, if student is coming as a couple or family with children is little expensive whereas single student costs is different, so we ensure you know these costs before committing to study in Australia.

There are some nationalities which are lucky to get exemption in OSHC as those countries has reciprocal health care agreement with Australia like Belgium & Norway. Swedish Students also get exempted till some extent, if they hold insurance of Kammarkollegiet, they don't have to purchase OSHC.

In OSHC, there are minimum service which should be included are: -

• The benefit amount listed in the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee for 'out-of-hospital' medical services like visiting a doctor.
• 100% of the MBS fee for in-patient medical services like an operation.
• Shared accommodation in a public hospital
• Shared accommodation in a private hospital - but only if the hospital has a contract with the OSHC insurer.
• Accommodation for day surgery
• Some prosthetic (artificial limb) devices
• Pharmaceutical (medicine) benefits up to $50 per item - maximum of $300 a year for a single member / $600 for a family.
• Ambulance service
